year in review...

sorry fans of the Daily D but i've been doing it and writing about it. got fired at the beginning of the month so you'd think i would have been blogging more. anyways, i'll keep this short. in 2013 i lost 91 lbs and beat my all time riding record of 6027 miles and rode 6042.5 miles. those are the things i'm most proud of accomplishing. this year my goal is simple: Finish Ironman Coeur 'd Alene in under 15 hours.

my goal weight for the event is 225 lbs and right now i'm 267 lbs. yeah, i gained a little since september but with all my upcoming multi-sport training i think it's doable.

good bye 2013 and hello 2014. looking forward to great things!!!

my second favorite month...

(233 days til IM CDA) ok, so if you're still check on the blog i'm sorry for taking the month of October off. basically i've been eating like crap and going out on dates so i gained some weight and other than some minor milestones, i haven't gained much in the way of training. i'm back on track but won't post my weight until i'm close to my last post of 256lbs.

but hey this is my second favorite month of the year in Texas. let me cliff notes october:

fastest 54 mile route.
fastest 15 mile route.
fastest 5 mile time trial.
5000 miles for the year (at 5300 now)
started doing pushups

pbr and spontaneous assplosions...

(278 days til Ironman CDA) i don't know why but i'm starting to dread my IM training. the good news is i won't really have to work my cycling that much but unless i want to be walking for 7 hours i need to start run training. my feet are in bad shape. it's gotten A LOT better since i've lost the weight but they are still bad. my last run/walk experiment left me hurting for almost 1 month later. it just drives home the point i need to LOSE WEIGHT. yeah, i know i am but it never hurts to reinforce the message daily. you don't lose almost 100 lbs in a year without being consistent.

i'm not going to go into a long story about how my group rides have been going. but lets just say i'm a whole lot better than i look :) keep in mind i have 5000 miles in my cycling bank account this year so i got some to spend when i need to. i'm the most in shape fat guy i know. i set a pbr on the 54 mile route with 3 10% grade hills. i did 50 in under 3 hours for the first time in 7 years!!!

i have a ways to go but it feels good to make progress. oh yeah, the spontaneous ass-plosion was my front tire blowing up while i was just sitting there eating my doughnut at BG coffee shop. sitting at the table and i hear that pissssssssttt sound coming from my bike. i'm like WTH??? well better it happened just leaning against a tree than me riding it :)

doritos locos tacos...

(285 days til Ironman CDA) kinda hard to believe that i lost weight this week. seeing as how i ONLY rode on the weekends (discounting labor day) and ate a dozen doritos locos tacos during the week. man those things are like crack. i figured out i can eat two fast and the last one slow and they all go down. again, this is knowledge i should be having :) i did that like 4 days last week. i guess it's a good thing because now i don't crave them and moved back to healthier options.

labor day i headed out with no agenda and ran into Fred and Fred Jr and Matt from mad duck. they were on mountain bikes but the one day in the last month it decided to sprinkle was labor day so the trails were closed. so a dirt ride at river legacy turned into a road ride for them. they hadn't been out there before so i took them on a tour of the route i have ridden hundreds of times. it was good because when i ran into them i was going home after only 25 miles. they helped me tack on another 15.

i started lifting weights at the house 3 days a week. i'm doing this in place of riding in the mornings. 2 main reasons why: first when IM training starts in earnest i won't have to time to build muscle really. and second with all the loose skin i have muscles make my body look better. i'm a mesomorph. that means my body type is one that tends to put on muscle well. if that's what genetics wants me to do then that's what i'll do.

aight' den. dont worry i'm off the tacos :)

happy labor day...

last week was the longest week ever. one night i binge ate 4 skor bars back to back from the stress. i'm in the process of eliminating that "stress" so i think i nipped that stress eating in the bud. i'll keep my "official" weigh-ins on monday mornings mostly so i can have a goal and time to shoot for.

HHH
the hotter than hell hundred was better than i expected. the first year i tried the hundred i completed it. the next time i didn't. i'm glad i failed miserably the second time because i prepared like crazy making sure i would make it. it was more about how/what to eat/drink, the electrolyte balance and my calorie intake. i'd say i was almost perfect. after i got off the bike i could have run 5 miles. it felt awesome.

YEAR ANNIVERSARY
that was a horrible day. but i will share that it felt awesome to have lost 91 lbs. i was so consumed with hitting a hundred in a year that i lost the fact that i had last NINETY ONE POUNDS!!! no wonder i feel great and have more energy.

IRONMAN UPDATE
i decided i won't be doing the multisport thing in earnest until late october. right now the best exercise for burning fat and calories is cycling. the lighter i am when i start the other sports the better i will be and the more focused i will be on performance. ideally 240 is a good weight for me to start running. that was the weight my ortho wanted me to shoot for because i was 250 when i tore my ACL the first time. ten less than that would be a good target. that said. no matter what i will start walking after my rides beginning november 1st.

time to get my ride on... yes it is raining, no that doesn't stop me, that's why they made chain lube and my bike is titanium :)

one week left...

(51 weeks post-op) i felt strong this weekend. i did the fastest 50 miles so far. i'm a long way from laying down 19.4 mph for 75 like i did when i was in shape (7 years ago) but hey, progress is progress. i dropped almost a pound this week and my legs are super strong so i'm sure i'm over the plateau. got the hotter'n hell hundred this saturday, so i'm not riding more than hour during the week. one thing i realized was that resting...completely...isn't a good idea. i took the work week off last week only to have the most painful first hour on my 50 miler saturday morning. riding a little the day before a big event is definitely the best. that said you definitely don't want to cook yourself before either.

next week will be the anniversary of the surgery that put me back on the right path. like i tell everyone. the first 3 months were magic because you COULDN'T eat enough to gain. but after that you can. which means you have to watch what you eat and exercise... diet and exercise... just like everyone else. no big secret. if i showed most people my garmin data they'd pass out with all the miles i put in. when i put them. and how often i put them in. in other words IT AINT MAGIC. it's work!!! i'm just trying to keep it real for those that are thinking about going down this path. it's a lifelong lifestyle change.

(11 months 2 weeks post-op) had a 3 day weekend and rode A LOT!!! did my normal 54 miler on friday. rode with my "original" triathlete friend and her friend on saturday (that hurt) and rode the modified mad duck ride on sunday for grand total of 150 miles in 3 days.

yeah, dragging your ass up hills is MAJOR motivation to lose weight. because i was doing so much riding i decided to eat more. i shoved in a lot of protein, half of it lean, and hydrated like a mutha... that said, because i was probably calorie for calorie there wasn't much weight lost. only point 2 lbs but i'll take it.

800 but not 900...

(11 months one week post-op) so i finished up the month of July with 800 miles. i won't be doing 900 this month :) mostly because my company moved from 2 miles from home to 15 miles. so that's from a 5 min commute to 30 mins. this will prevent me from doing 30 milers in the morning before work. well, not prevent, but seeing as how i'm close to burn out i'm NOT going to go on a 30 mile ride before work in time to be at work at 8:30 :) running will be on hold until i get closer to my ideal weight. and swimming i will fit in when i can.

the diet is coming along. my new work location makes it a haul to get to the garage so i've just been grabbing something from the building deli. they have fish and wraps so it's pretty good and good for you. protein, protein, protein is what i've shoving down the gullet and it seems to be paying off.

blowed out tire...

(11 months post-op) wellz it's the last month to do it big. i was planing on one year 100 lbs lost but i'm fairly certain that's not going to happen. i'd have to lose almost 20lbs for that to be a reality. but hey, i'll try :)

this week i rode or swam everyday. the weight isn't coming off easily but it is coming off. that said, i decided i like the feeling of improving my rides rather than the feeling of losing weight. my legs felt like steel this week. i got faster EVERYDAY. and i added more hills everyday and was still faster. so i know why i haven't lost as much weight. it's because i'm adding muscle.

swimming helps my body recover and i feel great afterwards. even with my underwater audio headphones/iPod it's still boring :) but how listening to music helps me is that i now get to say "just finish the song" and it gets my mind off of how far i've gone. i absolutely love my garmin with it's ability to count laps. it's off a little but it's close enough for me not to have to count laps.

so yesterday i rode the mad duck coffee ride by myself. i rode from the house to the shop and got there 15 mins late. so thought i'd try to catch up. only figure out 10 miles later there wasn't many people out there. and there was about a 2 mile stretch of resurfaced concrete. you know, the kind that looks like someone to took a meat tenderizer to the concrete. that totally ate up my rear wheel. i made it home ok though. but i was feeling extra squirrely and went to ride the las colinas route with my buddy jon. 14 miles into the ride KABLAM!!! the side wall gave out on the tire itself. oh wellz. after we changed the tube i had to ride VERY SLOWLY to get back to the car. i thanked Jon for screwing up his ride having to ride back with me but, hey, i'd do it for him :)

net zero...

welp, after a week where i swam more and rode less and didn't run at all i lost NO weight. that's ok. mostly because my legs felt like steel this weekend and climbed more than i had this past weekend than i had this month combined. i rode the griffen more and getting into the aero position will need to be worked on. not a lot to report. riding a ton, swimming more and not running.

i stopped running because it hurts the feet A LOT. so i decided that i will do some treadmill walking instead of running to get myself used to the pounding slowly. stay tuned.

50 rain soaked miles...

(10 months 3 weeks post op) the biggest things this last week was: i started running, and broke out the griffen tri-bike. although i lost weight the number has been the same all week starting on tuesday morning. hasn't gone up or down since. i might even have to...GASP...count calories!!! i know i will at some point but i'm going to hold off for a while. once i start i won't stop so best to hold off until to i have to do it.

did a two a day on saturday (30 with hills in the morning, 18 on the griffen at night) then i rode 50 miles in the RAIN sunday morning. the rule is "never start a ride in the rain" and i didn't but 2 miles in it started and didn't stop. if there's a thunderstorm i end the ride as soon as possible, but it's just rain it can be refreshing. this was not refreshing, it was a beat down!!! but hey, i made myself do it so that's a good thing.

weaker but thinner...

(10 months 2 weeks post op) what a week... i rode 74 on 7/4 riding from my house in arlington to my parent's house in fort worth going along the trinity trails. that dang near killed me :) took friday off, then rode 50 on saturday. i planned on riding a slow-er paced group ride, the coffee ride at mad duck on sunday but i got 2 flats and had to call a cab :(. then i decided i was going to do 2 loops on river legacy mtn bike trail that afternoon to make up for it. but that didn't happen. in the middle of the first loop i bonked big time.

that brings me to the overall theme this month: just lose weight!!! i have always known that you can't improve performance and lose weight at the same time. you will always sacrifice one for the other. sure you can make gradual improvements in both at the same time but you're doing yourself a disservice by not concentrating fully on one.

but i really forgot why that was until this weekend. after looking at my garmin data i noticed me burning 4800, 4500 and 3100 calories on my three biggest rides this week. all of them were slow paced because honestly every time i pushed it i got that "no energy here" feeling in my gut. if you've ever been an athlete you know what i'm talking about. why? because i'm not eating enough calories. plain and simple. i'm really concentrating on eating clean so i'm not really getting a lot of calories down. i mean not enough to perform at a high level. i'm just getting enough in to finish my exercise. there will be plenty of time for me to build endurance but i only have a shrinking window to really drop the weight.

so that said...MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

poppin' out the back...

(10 weeks one week post-op) although it may look like i dropped 7 lbs this past week, i'm chalking it up to body weirdness. but hey, it beats the alternative :) those mystery pounds left sometime on wednesday and then it was like a pound a day after that. again, it was just weird because i wasn't dehydrated and i was eating at my normal times at about the same amount. i'll take it.

i went for a group ride yesterday (first in 4 years). it was the mad duck coffee ride. i popped out the back so many times when i hit the hills that i lost count. in fact the final straw was me losing the group somewhere around n. richland hills and me forgetting the route (it had been 4 years LOL) so instead of just waiting for the group at the coffee shop i booked it home. made it home in time enough to watch the end of TDF stage 2. that was about 45 miles. i decided that i need to do more group rides and hit more streets. river legacy is nice during the week but i need to venture out on the weekends to places with more hills, wind, and road conditions.

that afternoon i realized i was only short 30 miles of 700 for the month. so i went out for a "quick" 30 that night. well, THREE hours later, i made it back home. first i got a spongy tire and decided since i was only 10 miles away from home i'd use a cartridge without changing the tube. then 1 mile after that it went completely flat. i think the valve broke because i never saw anything in the tube or the tire to make it deflate that fast. so i change the tube after about 30 mins (long story but the inflater was jacked it normally takes me 5 mins) but i finally made it home with 75 miles in the bank for the day and 700.79 miles for the month!!!

Ironman Coeur d'Alene June 29th 2014: REGISTERED!!!

(10 months post op) welp, i gained weight this week. i sort of knew that this was going to happen but i was hoping it wouldn't end. this mysterious 3 lbs showed up monday and was there all week long. i didn't help that i was bed-ridden all weekend. i pulled some muscle in my neck/back sort of behind my shoulder blade. so i laid in bed all weekend and took muscle relaxers. i even took off work today. i don't think laying around helped much so i'm going to try to ride if not tomorrow then wednesday.

11 straight weeks of weight loss streak over... time to start another... that being said i signed up for my Ironman CDA 2014. it's paid for, now for the hard part...TRAINING!!! i'll keep this simple the next 6 months will be spent losing weight and weight training. i'll start swimming with the irving masters group starting in september. and i might sign up for LA fitness membership for their pool access but we'll see.

150 miles and a bee sting for memorial day...

(9 months post op) i'll keep this short, mostly cuz i'm tired :) 3 x 50 milers give me 150 miles on the long weekend. had to kick summer off right. oddly enough today's 50 was easier. eating gu on the ride and drinking a combo of yoohoo and soymilk for a recovery drink and REALLY focusing on riding with a high cadence. doing that has made me feel a lot better on the rides the following day. however, i ate like crap again this week but i emptied the fridge of all crap and through it away. then proceeded to grill some pork, ground beef and chicken. i also made some smashed potatoes.

btw, i got stung by bee 2 miles into my ride and other than your eye what is the worst place to get stung when riding? behind your knee!!! you know, so every pedal stroke it gets aggravated!!! after about 15 mins the pain was ignorable and after an hour i didn't feel it much at all. but what kind of act God does it take for a bee to get blown sideways into and behind my knee just before it closes. i know that when i do my ironman things will probably not go smoothly so facing adversity now will only make me better.

broken pedal...

(8 months 3 weeks post op) well, i ate like crap the whole week. only ate a home cooked meal for dinner once this past week. the only thing that caused weight loss this week was the miles i put in.

broken pedal story: so saturday i ride 50 miles and decided i needed insulated water bottles. my three non insulated bottles, two of which started off as solid ice, were all melted after 90 minutes. so on sunday i head out for another 50 miler with 3 insulated bottles. i make it down ascension hill and hear a pop. didn't really make anything of it. then i get off my bike to walk it down to the trail. when i try to clip back in it doesn't work. that pop i heard was the spring breaking on the pedal. so i was planning on riding 50 miles and now i'm at the bottom of ascension hill with a broken pedal. what to do??? i rode back to the house, swapped out the pedal then headed back out to the trail. that was an extra 3.5 miles i wasn't plan on riding but hey, nothing can stop the determined.

the bad news is that crank brothers doesn't make quattro pedals anymore. so i'm hoping they can be rebuilt.

back to my original FAT self...

(8 months 2 weeks post-op) concentrated on diet AND exercise. the result was almost FIVE pounds lost this week.

eating the chicken for breakfast really helped. my new thing when it comes to eating out is this: plan to NOT take anything home. in other words, if i can't eat it there then don't order it. i noticed i had been planning on taking food home because i can't finish what i order. but this last month i noticed i can eat a whole piece of fish and most of the veggies if that's what i order. focusing on those good options served me well this week.

that said, i also cranked up the mileage to 50. i'm trying to make sure when i pull out the road bike to get 50 miles in. or if it's the mtn bike to ride at least 15 miles. the funny thing is, i'm burning less calories than i was a month ago even though i'm riding further. yesterday i rode over 20 miles in an hour and a half and barely cracked 1000 calories. 1002 to be exact. but what i think is this: time on the bike matters more than calories burned as it relates to weight loss. the longer you're on the bike is the longer you're NOT in front of the tv, refrigerator, bed or couch. and the longer you were on the bike the longer it takes your body to get comfortable when you get off. that means it takes you longer for your appetite to return. this is at least my observation.

anyways, this is a MAJOR milestone. 287 was the fattest i had ever been in my life until severe depression kicked in after my fiancee left. me being under that means i'm free from the anchor depression strapped me with. now, i'm just a fat version of me...and NOT that other guy that had been occupying my body the last 5 years. and THAT is more awesome than i can put into words.

May i focus on endurance...

(8 months 1 week post-op) so for the month of May i'm focusing on endurance. April was about getting out a lot and taking pictures. so my official stats for April was:
555 miles
44 hours
just under 10,000 ft climbed
40000+ calories burned
10lbs lost

that's doing it for a just under 300lbs dude, wouldn't you say? so this month i need to start pushing the limits. i need to get my fat ass used to being in the saddle over 2.5 hours. so i'm going to try to crank my base up to 40 and when i get faster to 50 miles. right now it takes me 3:40 to ride 50 and that's too long to do regularly. but if i can get that under 3 then it's doable. but for me to do that...i have to crank up the mileage.

diet: the dark horse in the room... i made a bunch of grilled chicken this weekend and grilled skirt steak. i put them in a bunch of 8oz containers and if i need something quick to eat i pop one in the microwave for 30 seconds and i'm off. i'm also making (very fattening) mashed potatoes. why? because i little bit with something healthy satisfies that naughyness in the taste buds you need every now and then. and besides they're better for you than french fries :)

almost 2 lbs lost this week and i'll take it, seeing as how i had 2 pints of ben and jerrys this week. yeah, yeah, i know :)

happy earth day...

(8 months post-op) so after the big 52 mile effort last sunday, i haven't had a day off!!! i have ridden every day since. don't worry i haven't been killing myself. lots of one hour rides mixed in there with no two-a-days. with it being april in Texas i HAVE to ride to get it all in. there will be too many days this summer that will be ridiculously hot so i'm getting it in when i can.

i rode out of the house yesterday and about 10 mile into my ride i popped a spoke. i was only 2 mile away from the house at the time and i had a decision: do i go home and end the ride? go home and get the mountain bike? or just ride 20 more miles with a busted spoke... hmmm... so i decided since i had 31 more spokes and most importantly my cell phone (which i always have) that the risk of getting stranded was far less than the disappointment i'd feel if i went home at that point. i finished the ride no problem except my rear wheel rubbing the brake in the corners.

btw, the weight situation is back on track :)

2 weeks vacation...

(7 months post op) i basically took a two week vacation from riding to sort of hit the reset button. and with the job search and starting a new job my mind was focused on other things. at this point i really do need to start focusing more on the "quality" of food that goes down the gullet. the surgery took care of the "quantity" but if i stuff my face with garbage then what's the point?

the heartburn issue has gotten a whole lot better. for those that are thinking about the surgery what they don't tell you "enough" is that if you eat and drink too close together you'll get heartburn. if you eat too fast you'll get heartburn. if you wait too long between meals you'll get heartburn. i know the reasons for all these scenarios but it all kind of boils down to. your stomach is smaller but it is producing as much stomach acid as it was before the surgery. over time it goes down, and it has, but till the day i die i have to pay attention to the solid/liquid timing. zantac is my friend :)

april is my ABSOLUTE favorite month in Texas. so many good memories. bluebonnets, trees budding, and cool breezes. weather permitting i'll be riding a lot this month. even twice a day some days. let the games begin.

(6 months 1 week) well, my position was eliminated at work yesterday. in other words i was shit canned. in all honesty i knew it wasn't a place i wanted to be after the year i had there. 5 managers a "poor" rating on my review anf them changing tech from dot net to JAVA?!? anyways, i will miss the team but fuck the company.

the good news is that i'm continuing to drop the el-beez. i decided to "hit the reset button" this week. so i will see how long i can go with no caffeine and i will ride as much i as i can. i am SOOOOO close to dropping under 300. i crossed over 300 in december 2008 and NO DOUBT i will cross under it march 2013.

bag o concrete...

(6 months post op) it's official... 50 lbs lost [that's a bag o' concrete] my knees, ankles and feet thank me. i could have done better but i'll take it. when the weather get's better i am sure i will lose more quickly. i have been mostly concentrated on my diet since the weather is bad.

dr. kim says that diet is 90% of weight loss so i have to keep telling myself that. anyways, i just wanted to keep you guys posted. everyday i strive to do better. it's a journey not a destination.

50°...

tomorrow will be 6 months so i will post my official weight loss then. let's just say, i'm back on track. my goal was to be under 300lbs before the end of the month. well, the weather didn't cooperate so that didn't happen. i could have gone the "boot camp" route at the gym or did more lifting this month but Texas fooled me. we had an entire week where it was 50° every morning, and every morning that week i rode. my rule for riding period is: if it ain't at least fifty, i don't ride. life is too short to be miserable riding :) so far i have only been able to ride on the weekends.

i have been really trying to change what goes down the ol' gullet. cottage cheese and mandarin oranges for desert and limiting my "dining out". this has been easier than i thought.

diet > exercise...

(26 weeks post op) wow, that's all i can say. i lost almost 4 pounds last week and my riding was very limited. so what that did was cause me to really watch what i ate. i had a few 1100 calorie days not really thinking about it. the great thing about the surgery is you wait all day to eat something, even you're starving, you get full really quickly and you can't stuff yourself. that happened 3 days last week. i wasn't intentionally skipping meals (that's not good for you) it's just when i was hungry i was in meeting at work or out someplace where i couldn't eat. either way, my goal this month was to cross the 300 lbs mark ONCE AND FOR ALL!!! i have 10 days left to lose 4 lbs. it's sooooo doable. lets see.

back on track...

(25 weeks post op) ok, real talk. the reason i haven't really been posting much is because i haven't been eating the right things and have been gaining weight. or that is to say i "wasn't" so from november to december i gained 7 lbs (approx). so jan 1 i decided to go in the other direction. i am officially back on track. i will keep this quick and i will post later on "how and what" i was eating to gain weight. but for now i'm happy i'm back on track.

lessons of time...

well 2 days after my last post my brother in law passed away and it gave me some perspective. time... because of time, and the lack thereof, we are forced to do things when the time arises. it makes us prioritize and get things done that we used to put off. where am i going with this? i'll get married and have kids "someday". "someday" is becoming more and more asap. i'm a guy so i'm not in a hurry but it's on my mind.

time as it pertains to workouts is great because i HATE the gym, hate the trainer but i love to ride outside. with it being january, then the weather dictates, i ride. NO MATTER WHAT. i gained 2 lbs over the holidays and it seems no matter how much i ride it doesn't want to move. i've finally lost one of those lbs. but it wasn't easy. i think i've lost inches but since i don't measure i can't tell. i am in the best shape i've been in in years. since saturday i have ridden 5 times. 2 back to back 31 milers on the road and 3 off-road mtn bike rides at 11 miles each. all this and i'm still...

survived the holidays...

well, i ate it all and drank up all the egg nog i could and didn't gain any weight. now i'm getting back to the "mission" of getting myself back. i moved the weights and weight bench into the den. i moved the griffen (bike not cat) into the trainer in the den. basically my den looks like a gym :) but hey, i'm not entertaining much these days so it's best to get some use out of it. i started archery back in november because i liked it when i was a kid. so shooting targets in the back yard get me a little upper body workout too. i can't wait for the weather to allow for pre dawn riding again. no REALLY...i can't wait, meaning i have to "do" something else. so that's what i'm doing.

happy new year peeps
