till next year...

i will be postponing my Ironman Triathlon event until next year. i will be blogging here and there about my training (when i do some) and weight loss. i'm up 17 lbs from my low. so yeah you CAN gain weight after bariatric surgery. but honestly it takes A LOT longer to do it :) that will change in the coming weeks.

year in review...

sorry fans of the Daily D but i've been doing it and writing about it. got fired at the beginning of the month so you'd think i would have been blogging more. anyways, i'll keep this short. in 2013 i lost 91 lbs and beat my all time riding record of 6027 miles and rode 6042.5 miles. those are the things i'm most proud of accomplishing. this year my goal is simple: Finish Ironman Coeur 'd Alene in under 15 hours.

my goal weight for the event is 225 lbs and right now i'm 267 lbs. yeah, i gained a little since september but with all my upcoming multi-sport training i think it's doable.

good bye 2013 and hello 2014. looking forward to great things!!!

my second favorite month...

(233 days til IM CDA) ok, so if you're still check on the blog i'm sorry for taking the month of October off. basically i've been eating like crap and going out on dates so i gained some weight and other than some minor milestones, i haven't gained much in the way of training. i'm back on track but won't post my weight until i'm close to my last post of 256lbs.

but hey this is my second favorite month of the year in Texas. let me cliff notes october:

fastest 54 mile route.
fastest 15 mile route.
fastest 5 mile time trial.
5000 miles for the year (at 5300 now)
started doing pushups

weight: (TBA) lol :)

pbr and spontaneous assplosions...

(278 days til Ironman CDA) i don't know why but i'm starting to dread my IM training. the good news is i won't really have to work my cycling that much but unless i want to be walking for 7 hours i need to start run training. my feet are in bad shape. it's gotten A LOT better since i've lost the weight but they are still bad. my last run/walk experiment left me hurting for almost 1 month later. it just drives home the point i need to LOSE WEIGHT. yeah, i know i am but it never hurts to reinforce the message daily. you don't lose almost 100 lbs in a year without being consistent.

i'm not going to go into a long story about how my group rides have been going. but lets just say i'm a whole lot better than i look :) keep in mind i have 5000 miles in my cycling bank account this year so i got some to spend when i need to. i'm the most in shape fat guy i know. i set a pbr on the 54 mile route with 3 10% grade hills. i did 50 in under 3 hours for the first time in 7 years!!!

i have a ways to go but it feels good to make progress. oh yeah, the spontaneous ass-plosion was my front tire blowing up while i was just sitting there eating my doughnut at BG coffee shop. sitting at the table and i hear that pissssssssttt sound coming from my bike. i'm like WTH??? well better it happened just leaning against a tree than me riding it :)

doritos locos tacos...

(285 days til Ironman CDA) kinda hard to believe that i lost weight this week. seeing as how i ONLY rode on the weekends (discounting labor day) and ate a dozen doritos locos tacos during the week. man those things are like crack. i figured out i can eat two fast and the last one slow and they all go down. again, this is knowledge i should be having :) i did that like 4 days last week. i guess it's a good thing because now i don't crave them and moved back to healthier options.

labor day i headed out with no agenda and ran into Fred and Fred Jr and Matt from mad duck. they were on mountain bikes but the one day in the last month it decided to sprinkle was labor day so the trails were closed. so a dirt ride at river legacy turned into a road ride for them. they hadn't been out there before so i took them on a tour of the route i have ridden hundreds of times. it was good because when i ran into them i was going home after only 25 miles. they helped me tack on another 15.

i started lifting weights at the house 3 days a week. i'm doing this in place of riding in the mornings. 2 main reasons why: first when IM training starts in earnest i won't have to time to build muscle really. and second with all the loose skin i have muscles make my body look better. i'm a mesomorph. that means my body type is one that tends to put on muscle well. if that's what genetics wants me to do then that's what i'll do.

aight' den. dont worry i'm off the tacos :)

happy labor day...

last week was the longest week ever. one night i binge ate 4 skor bars back to back from the stress. i'm in the process of eliminating that "stress" so i think i nipped that stress eating in the bud. i'll keep my "official" weigh-ins on monday mornings mostly so i can have a goal and time to shoot for.

HHH
the hotter than hell hundred was better than i expected. the first year i tried the hundred i completed it. the next time i didn't. i'm glad i failed miserably the second time because i prepared like crazy making sure i would make it. it was more about how/what to eat/drink, the electrolyte balance and my calorie intake. i'd say i was almost perfect. after i got off the bike i could have run 5 miles. it felt awesome.

YEAR ANNIVERSARY
that was a horrible day. but i will share that it felt awesome to have lost 91 lbs. i was so consumed with hitting a hundred in a year that i lost the fact that i had last NINETY ONE POUNDS!!! no wonder i feel great and have more energy.

IRONMAN UPDATE
i decided i won't be doing the multisport thing in earnest until late october. right now the best exercise for burning fat and calories is cycling. the lighter i am when i start the other sports the better i will be and the more focused i will be on performance. ideally 240 is a good weight for me to start running. that was the weight my ortho wanted me to shoot for because i was 250 when i tore my ACL the first time. ten less than that would be a good target. that said. no matter what i will start walking after my rides beginning november 1st.

time to get my ride on... yes it is raining, no that doesn't stop me, that's why they made chain lube and my bike is titanium :)

one week left...

(51 weeks post-op) i felt strong this weekend. i did the fastest 50 miles so far. i'm a long way from laying down 19.4 mph for 75 like i did when i was in shape (7 years ago) but hey, progress is progress. i dropped almost a pound this week and my legs are super strong so i'm sure i'm over the plateau. got the hotter'n hell hundred this saturday, so i'm not riding more than hour during the week. one thing i realized was that resting...completely...isn't a good idea. i took the work week off last week only to have the most painful first hour on my 50 miler saturday morning. riding a little the day before a big event is definitely the best. that said you definitely don't want to cook yourself before either.

next week will be the anniversary of the surgery that put me back on the right path. like i tell everyone. the first 3 months were magic because you COULDN'T eat enough to gain. but after that you can. which means you have to watch what you eat and exercise... diet and exercise... just like everyone else. no big secret. if i showed most people my garmin data they'd pass out with all the miles i put in. when i put them. and how often i put them in. in other words IT AINT MAGIC. it's work!!! i'm just trying to keep it real for those that are thinking about going down this path. it's a lifelong lifestyle change.

(11 months 2 weeks post-op) had a 3 day weekend and rode A LOT!!! did my normal 54 miler on friday. rode with my "original" triathlete friend and her friend on saturday (that hurt) and rode the modified mad duck ride on sunday for grand total of 150 miles in 3 days.

yeah, dragging your ass up hills is MAJOR motivation to lose weight. because i was doing so much riding i decided to eat more. i shoved in a lot of protein, half of it lean, and hydrated like a mutha... that said, because i was probably calorie for calorie there wasn't much weight lost. only point 2 lbs but i'll take it.

800 but not 900...

(11 months one week post-op) so i finished up the month of July with 800 miles. i won't be doing 900 this month :) mostly because my company moved from 2 miles from home to 15 miles. so that's from a 5 min commute to 30 mins. this will prevent me from doing 30 milers in the morning before work. well, not prevent, but seeing as how i'm close to burn out i'm NOT going to go on a 30 mile ride before work in time to be at work at 8:30 :) running will be on hold until i get closer to my ideal weight. and swimming i will fit in when i can.

the diet is coming along. my new work location makes it a haul to get to the garage so i've just been grabbing something from the building deli. they have fish and wraps so it's pretty good and good for you. protein, protein, protein is what i've shoving down the gullet and it seems to be paying off.
